19. 103 Coffee Workshop

103 coffee workshop sri petaling

This café in Sri Petaling, 103 Coffee Workshop, has managed to surpass all my expectations and become a delightful surprise. Situated alongside other cafes, including Soft Serve, this unique establishment offers Japanese fusion cuisine that showcases the creative prowess of the café’s team.

As I opened the heavy sliding door to enter, the first surprise awaited me: the café was bustling with patrons. Despite visiting on a Sunday afternoon for lunch, I was taken aback by the crowd size. Almost every seat was occupied, and my companion and I were fortunate enough to secure the last two seats available. Thankfully, we were seated in a cozy corner at the back of the café, which provided a sense of personal space even when it was filled to capacity. The arrangement of seats allowed for a comfortable dining experience, with adequate spacing between tables.

103 coffee workshop food

The café’s décor immediately caught my attention, particularly the cement finishing on the walls and the charming ceramic pieces and trinkets scattered throughout. Even the table numbers were uniquely crafted using sturdy tin cans. Additionally, each table was equipped with a complimentary bottle of water, eliminating the need to request plain water to accompany our coffee or beverages.

The menu featured various enticing options, categorized into different Sri Petaling food groups. Rice bowls, known as Donburis, were a prominent choice, alongside Udon, appetizers, sandwiches, and pasta. Prices for main dishes ranged from RM17 to RM36, while appetizers were slightly cheaper at under RM10. I opted for the Spam sandwich (important to note that the café is non-halal), and my partner ordered the Yasai Itame Don, a vegetable rice bowl. Feeling a bit peckish, I also ordered a side of Maneki Onigiri.

The Yasai vegetable don was adorned with carrots, mushrooms, and a perfectly cooked wobbly egg, which enhanced the flavors when mixed with the rice. Surprisingly, the taste resembled the familiar Cantonese dish known as ‘Mun Fan’ or ‘Mui Fan’. The small salmon onigiri was satisfactory, although I would have preferred the accompanying shredded omelette to be less sweet.

Overall, I understand why patrons return to 103 Coffee Workshop time and again. It’s not only the food and inviting atmosphere that entice customers, but also the warm and well-trained servers who make each guest feel special.
